    A weekend in the Baix Penedès: vines in the morning, beach in the afternoon

    Bellvei is the one corner of Penedès where you can tour a winery in the morning and be on the sand ten minutes later. A real two-day itinerary.

    When people think of Penedès wine tourism they think of Sant Sadurní or Vilafranca. Fair enough: that is where the wineries are thickest on the ground. But Penedès runs all the way to the sea, and its southern stretch — the Baix Penedès — has something the rest does not: the beach ten minutes from the vines.

    Here is the weekend we recommend to anyone who asks.

    Saturday

    Morning · the winery

    Start early. We open visits at 10.00 and the first slot is the best one: light comes sideways into the ageing hall and the heat has not arrived yet.

    Coming as a couple or with friends, the Tradició Visit is the right size: one hour, six glasses and the traditional method explained properly. Coming with children, the Kids Visit lets everyone walk the same route and lets them toast too, with alcohol-free cava.

    Book ahead: Saturday mornings fill up days in advance.

    Midday · lunch in El Vendrell

    Ten minutes away. Look for somewhere with xató on the menu if it is in season (November to March): the escarole, salt cod, tuna and anchovy salad with romesco sauce is this county’s dish, and it pairs surprisingly well with a brut nature cava.

    Afternoon · the beach

    Calafell eight minutes away, Cunit ten, Coma-ruga fifteen. Three different beaches: Calafell has the promenade and the old fishermen’s quarter, Cunit is quieter, Coma-ruga has the widest sand.

    Evening · old Calafell

    Climb up to the Santa Creu castle before the sun goes down. You can see the whole coastline and, turning around, the plain of vines. The day closes its circle in a single glance.

    Sunday

    Morning · market and vines

    On Sundays we run visits from 10.00 to 14.00. If Saturday was your introduction, the Eco Experience is another world: organic viticulture, pet nat and orange wine. Few people know this happens here too.

    Midday · before you leave

    Stop by the winery shop. We open 10.00 to 14.00 on Sundays and you can take home what you tasted with no delivery to pay. If you are short of time, you can order online and it reaches you in 24–72 hours.

    Getting here

    • From Barcelona — AP-7 exit 31 or C-32 to Cunit. 45–50 minutes.
    • From Tarragona — N-340 towards Barcelona. 30 minutes.
    • By train — Calafell station (R2 Sud) plus a ten-minute taxi.

    We have free parking at the winery, with room for campervans.

    One last piece of advice

    Do not chain three wineries into one day. It is the wine tourist’s most common mistake: by the third visit you cannot tell anything apart and you leave feeling like you queued. One visit in the morning, unhurried, and the afternoon free. Wine makes more sense with a rested head and your feet in the sand.
